Wallace Stevens – Of Modern Poetry

I really liked Stevens’ poem “Of Modern Poetry”. His idea that poetry is constantly changing and is not always just defined by society but also by the poet. It is an accepted fact that poetry does change over time, but Stevens really spoke to recreating the idea of what poetry is versus relying on poetry that has already been written. He says that “It has to construct a new stage” instead of following the way it had been as he says “it repeated what Was in the script”. The idea of poetry speaking from the mind and being created from emotion in contrast to some of the conversations we’ve had lately about whether poetry is created or not. This is especially not something that Poe would agree with. However, I really liked this concept and how Stevens presented it.
